'Tackle a Trade', March 14

The Design Centre saw members of the Parramatta Football club come to Western Sydney Institute Kingswood TAFE to see what courses and career options there are available to them within all our disciplines at Design. All courses from the Kingswood campus where also represented in this showcase.

Andrew Snook and Justin Thomas showed the men the great facilities and opportunities available to them through our college. A great event.

Visual Merchandising Students at 2012 Sydney's Royal Easter Show

Visual Merchandising students from the Nepean Arts and Design Centre, Kingswood are involved in the preparation of displays at the 2012 Royal Easter Show. The work is part of their vocational work experience program. Students are completing their second year of the Diploma of Visual Merchandising.

The students are assigned two weeks of class time to assist in preparing displays using farm produce such as; wool, seed, fruit and vegetables. Students work with experienced design and production teams on the Northern NSW District stand and the South East Queensland stands in the round Produce Pavillion.

Viewed from the raised observation platform, the panoramic displays are stunning. The colours of the natural produce are coordinated assembled with meticulous detail. The structure is tiered, and follows the curve of the building with a sense of depth, texture.  Each display tells a story. For example; the Northern District’s display highlights the challenges faced by farmers from introduced diseases, pests and vermin. The scene stretches from ocean to land with an underwater feature that includes real introduced carp. Parts of the display even move. A boat aground in an ocean bay rocks back and forth as rats scurry to shore, the occasional cane toad can be even be found.
